Winter Outdoor Activities to Enjoy Around Boise

Picture this: cold days, crisp mornings, and the distant foothills covered in snow. It sounds like a regular winter sight in Boise! Many think Idaho might just be too frigid for anything during the winter months, but with only a little snow, there's still so much to enjoy during the cold months of winter!
Visit The Springs Hot Springs Retreat at Idaho City
The Springs in Idaho City is a haven of peace and relaxation, and it's only an hour away from downtown Boise. Treat yourself to a relaxing afternoon (or weekend) while watching the snow fall or stay in one of their luxury rooms.
The hills at Camel's Back Park are ideal for tubing and sledding. There are also areas in the North End closeby that are perfect for hot chocolate and coffee.
With a variety of activities for everyone, including tubing, skiing, and snowboarding, Bogus Basin is a great place to have some outdoor winter fun! If you'd rather take in a forest view, ride the mountain coaster instead. Dress warmly and take the scenic drive up to Bogus. Fun fact: Since Bogus sits above the skyline, you're likely to experience sunny skies in the middle of gloomy winter days.
Snowmobiling in the Boise National Forest
The Boise National Forest has numerous miles of trails for snowmobilers. The areas include Smith's Ferry, Idaho City, Garden Valley, and Anderson Ranch. There are also groomed areas near Cascade and Idaho City. Nearby, the Winter Wonderland Trail features a variety of routes that can be accessed from Smith's Ferry. These include the Donnelly, Idaho City, and Cascade areas. Enjoy scenic vistas from any trail you choose!
Visit the McCall Winter Carnival
The McCall Winter Carnival is a yearly event held in the town of McCall, Idaho. It started in the 1960s as an offshoot of the Payette Lake Winter Games, which brought visitors to the area. Since then, it's welcomed more than 60,000 people to the site every year! Check out the snow sculpture competition and enjoy food and goods from various local vendors.
Hike to the Kirkham Hot Springs
Kirkham Hot Springs is located near the South Fork Payette River, just east of Lowman. This hot spring is surrounded by scenic waterfalls and a trail that leads to the soaking pools. The Kirkham Ridge Trail is a great place to hike, ride a horse, or mountain bike. It begins less than a mile away and connects with other trails in the area. The South Fork Payette River also offers various recreational activities, such as whitewater rafting, fly fishing, and more, depending on the season.
Due to the conversion of the campground into a day-use area, the Kirkham Hot Springs is currently only open from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm. until further notice.
